Cem Köksal 3.7.1976’da İstanbul’da doğdu. Müziğe ilkokul çağında mandolin çalarak başladı. Çocukluğu anne ve babasının da etkisiyle 60’ların müziklerini dinleyerek geçen Cem’in mandolinden gitara geçişi 1987 yılına rastlar.
1991-1992 yıllarında Derya Yener’den aldığı teorik müzik dersleri müzikal gelişiminde önemli rol oynar. Bu sıralarda arkadaşlarıyla İstanbul Kadıköy’de bir bodrum katında müzik çalışmalarına devam etmekte, aynı zamanda okumakta olduğu Alman Lisesi’nde müzikal faaliyetlere katılmaktadır.
Günün popüler rock grupları her ne kadar ilgisini çekse de bir süre sonra değişiklik arayışına girer ve büyük ölçüde Johann Sebastian Bach’ın “Air” inin etkisi ile müzikal görüşü ve üretkenliği farklı bir yönde gelişir. Artık klasik müzik Cem Köksal’ın hayatında önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Tercihlerini hep tonal modlardan yana kullanmaktadır ve Johann Sebastian Bach onun en büyük kahramanlarından biri olmuştur.
Çalışmalarını gitar tekniğinde mükemmelleşmeye yönlendiren Cem Köksal, standart tekniklerde olduğu kadar alternatif tekniklerde de şaşırtıcı gitar yeteneğini sergilemeye başlar. Gitarın anatomisine merak salan Cem Köksal aylarca süren bir çalışmanın sonunda tümüyle kendi dizaynı olan (Shark) bir gitar yaratır.
Müzikal olgunluğa eriştiğini hissettiğinde ilk albümünü üretmek için çalışmaya başlar. Beste ve düzenlemeleri yapmak, sözleri yazmak dışında albümü kendi kaydetmek istemekteydi. Bu tek kişinin altından kalkması zor gözüken bir yük olmakla beraber Cem Köksal’a göre istediği ürünü elde etmenin en iyi yoluydu. Çalışmalarına yine okuyarak başlar. İki yıl boyunca bulduğu kaynaklarla kendini eğitir. Stüdyo şemalarını çizer, kendine uygun ekipmanları tespit eder ve 2002 yılında kendine ait Stüdyo 29’u kurar.
2003 yılı içinde kayıtları tamamlanan albüm, “...Just Set me Free!!” adını aldı ve müzik severlerin beğenisine sunuldu. Albüm yapısı ve içeriği itibarı ile Türkiye müzik piyasasında bir ilk olma özelliğini taşıdığı halde kısa zamanda çok iyi tepkiler aldı ve yüksek satış rakamlarına ulaştı. “...Just Set Me Free!!” Cem Köksal’a esas amacı olan müzik severlerle buluşma şansını tanıdı. Verdiği bir çok konserin yanı sıra 2005 yılında Coca-Cola Soundwave’e davet edildi. Toplam 11 ilde 150.000’den fazla üniversite öğrencisiyle buluşan Cem Köksal ve ekibi gösterdiği performans ile 2006 yılında tekrar bu büyük organizasyonda yerini aldı.
Bu başarıya imza atan ilk ve tek müzisyen olma sıfatını taşıyan Cem Köksal, son turnede 200.000’in üzerinde seyirci karşısına çıktı. Fakat bu projede önemli bir farklılık vardı. Deep Purple ve Rainbow gibi dünyanın en büyük gruplarının solistliğini yapmış Joe Lynn Turner Cem Köksal’ın teklifini kabul edip ekibe dahil oldu. Son derece başarılı geçen konserler seyircilere unutulmaz dakikalar yaşattı. Soundwave’in Bursa ayağında toplam 35.000 kişinin katılımıyla bir konser DVD’si kaydedildi. Tekniği, performansı, seyircisiyle Türkiye’de tek olan bu DVD, “Cem Köksal featuring Joe Lynn Turner – Live!!” adıyla Mart 2007’de raflarda yerini aldı.
Cem Köksal’ın hemen bunun ardından tamamladığı ve vokallerde Şenay Lambaoğlu’nun yer aldığı ilk Türkçe sözlü albümü “Siyah Beyaz Masallar” da Mayıs ayı içerisinde satışa sunuldu. 2011‘de yeni albümün kayıtları için Mats Levén (ex-Therion, Malmsteen) gruba dahil oldu. Albümde Mehmet Kaya Türkçe vokalleri, Mats Levén ise İngilizce vokalleri üstlendi, Zeynep Casalini’nin konuk olarak yer aldığı konsept albüm “Vigilante”nin ilk EP’si Nisan 2011’de satışa çıktı.

Cem Köksal was born in Istanbul on 03.07.1976. He has started his music life in primary school by playing mandolin. The days that Cem, whose childhood was passed by listening to the music of 60s due to his parents' influence, passed to guitar from mandolin were in 1987.
Theoretical music courses that he took from Derya Yener in 1991 and 1992 had a significant place in his musical development. During these days he was continuing on his musical works in a basement floor in Kadıköy, Istanbul with his friend and was participating to musical events in his high school, German High School.
Although he was interested in the popular rock groups of those days he began to look for something different and his musical perspective and productivity took a new path especially due to the influence of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Air". From then on, classical music was very important for Cem Köksal. He was always choosing tonal modes for his music and Johann Sebastian Bach had became one of his greatest heroes.
Blending the classical music elements with modern music in a harmonious way, using the guitar up to the limits, and high melodic level of songs despite of thousands of flowing notes and a very strong sound has deeply influenced him. Cem Köksal, who directed his studies for being perfect in guitar playing, began to show his surprising guitar skills not only in standard techniques but also in alternative techniques.
After he became interested in the anatomy of guitars he created a new guitar (Shark) after months of studies, which is totally a product of his design.
When he felt that he has reached his musical maturity, he began to the studies for his first album. He was not only aiming to prepare the compositions and arrangements and to write the songs of his album but also to record it. Although this was being seemed as a huge burden that cannot be overcome by one single person, Cem Köksal was thinking that this was the only way for achieving the results that he wants.
He again started his studies by reading books and he trained himself for two years with the resources that he found. He drew the studio plans and schemes and established his own studio, Studio 29, in 2002. The album, records of which have been completed in 2003, has been given the name of "Set Me Free!!" and offered to the appreciation of music lovers.
The album was a big surprise because it was the first time that a major label (Universal) gave it's label for a heavy-metal album, which had lyrics in English. In short time Cem Köksal was much known at music era and that brought the offers for concerts. Köksal participated many big festivals such as Rockistanbul with Queensryche, Rock the Nations with Manowar, and Coca- Cola Soundwave Tour 2005 - which was a total success. The band performed in 11 different cities of Turkey to 150.000 University students.
Because of his high performance on stage, Coca Cola Soundwave Org. invited Köksal to the 2006 tour again. But this time the band included legendary rock vocalist Joe Lynn Turner former vocalist of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen etc. The tour was for 10 different cities and pulled 200.000 students to the organization. Cem Köksal produced a spectacular DVD of Bursa concert. 35.000 students were the highlight of this big show. This DVD was released in March 2007 Cem Köksal feat. Joe Lynn Turner Live!! . Immediately after this release he finished his second solo album Siyah Beyaz Masallar (Black and White Fairy Tales), sang in Turkish by Senay Lambaoglu a jazz vocalist. The album has been released on 17th of May 2007. The third studio album "Vigilante Episode One" EP was released in April 2011 featuring Mats Leven on vocals.
